Supplementation, How to Start?

The basic ground for anyone to start with nutritional program which consists of protein and multi-vitamin/mineral supplements. Most of the experts agree that taking multi-vitamin/mineral is the best starter in replacing short or missing nutrients in your diet. We can see many of multi-vits on the shelves and not many of us know what is exactly behind those complex labels. Dr Bruce Miller have developed some cautions how to read the labels and to understand what do we exactly need, at least eliminating questionable products in the market today.
Cautions For Reading a Multi-vits Label

1. Check all nutrients with establish DVs are listed on the label. DV or Daily Value previously called as RDA is amount intended to provide sensible guidelines for most healthy people. If it label with lower DV from what your DV need then it is incomplete DV coverage. Currently there are 12 vitamins and 7 minerals listed in the DV and make sure the label got all these 19.

2. Beware of lengthy, impressive-looking labels. This kind of label does not mean they have adequate DV contents and they are added for the fluff to the label. For example, it list 25milligrams as one of the ingredients, there is no DV for this ingredient which means that no amount has been set for health. Actually no one knows if 25mg is adequate. Usually this kind of non-essential nutrients are marked with asterisk so you will know it is not in DV.

3. Check the percents of the DV present. Each of vits should be in at least 100% of the DV and if it less then it is not adequate product. Mineral should be at least 100% with exception of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

4. Make sure the multi-vits supplies adequate amounts of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. These bulky minerals are difficult and expensive to make into a tablet. A good amount is 45% of the DV for calcium, about 50% of the magnesium DV and 35%  for phosphorous per serving. Beware of manufacturers who have 100% of the DV of each of these minerals in one tablet which require tremendous compression to form the tablet and most of them will not dissolve in time to be great use to the body.Tablet with less than the 45/50/35 of these minerals will not give you adequate of this mineral for a good multi-vits. Sometimes manufacturers will include one of these minerals and leave out others. If you need more of this minerals, consume a separate supplement.

5. The magic vegetable systems. We see publicity of Garlic, broccoli and various cruciferous veggies as being of benefit to help prevent various disease and some manufacturer claim this as their part of the multi-vits. It may be true but the amount present in the formula are far less than you need for adequate protection as provided by real veggies. This compounded veggie are present in small amounts and it is sales hype.

6. The label should be readable.

7. Read the additional literature or catalogue. It will be helpful if it includes clinical study info of the product rather than sales talk of the accompany literature not a science.

8. Multi-vits in a liquid capsule form. Commonly most of the multi-vits are in the dry tablet capsule form and not many studies liquid capsule.

9. Micronutrients. 9 accepted micronutrients products are up to the latest research, such as selenium, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, tin, vanadium, boron and silicon.

Look for the product contents and honesty of the label and manufacturer literature instead of the flamboyant product names and description, hype terms like “extra power”, “mega-nutrition power”, turn your sex life into perfect “10”, promise to cure baldness, make your skin younger and so on. If you use the 9 suggestions above when looking for multi-vits supplement, you will be more likely to choose a high-quality product.
